Off the saharan coast, near the Tropic of Cancer, the Canary Islands present an extraordinary volcanic and contrast in landscapes. The archipelago has seven islands which are divided into two provinces : one is Las Palmas with three eastern islands and the other one is Santa Cruz de Tenerife, with four occidental islands. The archipelago, anchorage at the time of the great discoveries, is a convergence centre of the winds and streams which had been propitious to Christopher Columbus’ three caravels. On the other side, the Canarians also left for the New World and founded the city of Montevideo (Uruguay), gave the ethnic element of the cuban « guajiro », made Caracas (Venezuela) the third canarian city and settled down in Louisiana. The Gran Canaria is the most crowded of the archipelago and is called « the small continent ». Las Palmas is proud of its very active port where many vessels anchor flying flags of different countries. Its oldest, “Vegueta”, reminds us of Columbus’s passage as he stayed there before leaving for the New World. Santa Cruz de Tenerife is the biggest of the islands, situated between Gran Canaria and La Gomera, about 300 km from african continent and approx. 1500 km from the iberian peninsula. This volcanic island has a triangular shape with the highest summit in Spain, the Teide is 3 700 m. Santa Cruz rises like an amphitheatre from the ocean’s coast. The most eastern island is Lanzarote which has a very particular atmosphere with its volcanoes. Arrecife, the commercial and administrative centre of the island of Lanzarote, has kept all its enchantment with its palm-trees, wonderful beach and two tiny forts 1000 km from Lisbon, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean is the island of Madeira, « the island of wood ». Called this way because of its extraordinary vegetation, it captivates people by its emerald couloured mountains and its exotic plants and flowers. Drink Madeira’s wines (which can stand up well to transport by ship) : take some Sercial and the Verdelho for cocktail time, Bual and the Malvoisie celebrated by Shakespeare, for dessert. In Funchal, its capital, visit the orchid-house of the Quinta das Cruzes, the Botanical Gardens, those of the Parrots and the Mercado dos Lavradores.
