In 1534, Spanish King Charles V asked to study a plan for a canal to allow
his fleet to reach Asia. Work began in 1879 under the direction of Ferdinand
d de Lesseps, who already built Suez Canal. But his project failed. In 1903,
Americans bought the right to build the Canal which opened to commercial traffic
in 1914. The Canal is accessible to ships up to 40.000 t in weight. It is
80 km long and a crossing lasts about 8 hours. A lock system (those of Gatún
for the Atlantic side and of Miraflores and Pedro Miguel for the Pacific side)
allow a vessel to be lifted to more than 25 m above the sea level and moved
to the Gatún’s Lake, one of the largest artificial lakes in the
world, and then to lower it to sea level at the end of its route.Valparaiso,
some kilometers from San Antonio is a legendary and cosmopolitan port situated
on an amphitheatre at the bottom of its bay. All houses are in blue, red or
green colours.
